Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute Successfully Hosts 2023 Freshmen Orientation and First Class of the Semester

On the afternoon of August 30, the Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute successfully held the 2023 Freshmen Orientation at the Baihui Hall Auditorium, Wenjiang Campus. The event was attended by leaders from both the Chinese and British sides of the institute, all administrative staff, the 2023 freshmen, and their parents. The meeting was hosted by Li Yan, Deputy Secretary of the Institute's Party Branch.

Dean Chen Yuan warmly welcomed the parents and freshmen, highlighting that the Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute serves as a crucial platform for Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CDUTCM) to connect with the world and cultivate international talents. She emphasized the institute’s commitment to combining the best of Eastern and Western education, ensuring high teaching standards and robust academic policies to create a top-tier medical and health education platform. Chen Yuan called for collaboration between the institute and families to support and encourage the students, urging the new students to harness their youthful energy and strive for excellence over the next four years.

Following this, Mark Hubée, Executive Dean from Keele University, provided an in-depth introduction to Keele University. He noted that the institute's curriculum integrates the strengths of both CDUTCM and Keele University, focusing on fostering students' abilities in independent thinking, research, and learning. Additionally, an external review mechanism is in place to ensure academic fairness. Mark also explained the academic regulations concerning grading, exams, and progression in the British system.

Li Yan, the Deputy Secretary, then introduced the student affairs, emphasizing the differences between university and high school education. She pointed out that students need significant adjustments in their mindset, psychological well-being, learning environment, habits, and methods. The institute aims to work closely with parents to help students smoothly transition from high school to university. She also mentioned that the institute would offer support for students’ future academic and career paths, including employment guidance and connections with employers, as well as domestic and international further education services. The goal is for students to achieve significant progress in moral standards, overall quality, and academic capabilities, ultimately becoming high-quality international talents.

Deputy Dean Chen Yunhui presented the training programs for the two majors offered by the institute. She detailed the 4+0 education model, where students will focus on strengthening their English skills in the first year, engage in comprehensive professional courses in the second and third years, and complete their final internships in the fourth year. The institute will also offer "second classroom" activities, covering areas such as labor education and aesthetic education. Chen Yunhui also discussed the faculty, curriculum development, and evaluation systems.
