In China, there are relatively few Sino-foreign cooperative programs in the medical field. In Sichuan, the only "Double First-Class" medical university offering such a program is the CDUTCM-Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute. Given the exclusive nature of this "limited edition" institute, many parents and prospective students have numerous questions.

Today, we will address 16 frequently asked questions to give you a comprehensive understanding of the CDUTCM-Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute!

Q1: Is it an enrollment within the planned quota? What is the minimum score for admission?

A1: Yes, it is within the planned quota. The admission scores/rankings for 2023 are as follows:

Q2: How to apply for the CDUTCM-Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute?

A2:   The only way to enter the institute is through Gaokao (National College Entrance Examination) application. There are no options for transfer students, adult education, or self-study programs. Please ensure you apply within the specified time frame for Gaokao in your province (late applications will not be considered).

Admissions are based on a score-first policy, meaning candidates are ranked by their scores from highest to lowest, and admitted according to their program preferences without setting score differences between preferences.

  Sichuan-specific application code:   5921

Other provinces:   Follow the application guidebook for your province.

Q3: Is the institute public or private? Is it independent?

A3:   Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a "Double First-Class" provincial public university in Sichuan. The CDUTCM-Keele Joint Health and Medical Sciences Institute is a non-independent Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution jointly operated with Keele University, functioning as a secondary college within the university, similar to the School of Clinical Medicine and the School of Pharmacy.

Q4: What programs are offered and how long is the study period?

A4:   The institute offers two programs: Rehabilitation Therapy and Health Service and Management. Both programs have a four-year duration.

Q5: Can students change their major after admission?

A5:   Students cannot transfer from Sino-foreign cooperative programs to regular programs. However, transfers between the two programs within the institute are generally allowed, following the university's major transfer policies.

Q6: Will the degree certificate mention "Sino-foreign cooperative education"?

A6:   No, the degree and graduation certificates will not mention "Sino-foreign cooperative education." Graduates will receive three certificates and dual diplomas identical to those of regular CDUTCM students, along with a degree certificate from Keele University.

Q7: Is it necessary to study abroad?

A7:   No, the institute follows a 4+0 model, meaning all four years of study are completed at the Wenjiang campus of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Foreign teachers come to the university to teach.

Q8: Are all courses taught in English? What if students cannot keep up?

A8:   British courses are taught entirely in English, while public courses and foundational courses are taught in Mandarin by Chinese teachers. In the first year, students receive intensive language courses covering English listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as academic English. If students have difficulty understanding the material, they can schedule free one-on-one tutoring sessions. Additional English tutoring is provided for students with weaker English skills at no extra cost.

Q9: Can students take the medical licensing exam?

A9:   No, neither program confers a medical degree. However, students can obtain medical technology or management-related certifications, such as Rehabilitation Therapist or Health Manager, which benefit future career development.

Q10: Can students apply for graduate studies abroad or in China?

A10:   Yes, students are encouraged to apply for graduate programs at top universities abroad. Due to the consistency in educational content, students can also pursue graduate studies in China. The four years of English instruction provide a competitive advantage for graduate applications.

Q11: What are the employment prospects after graduation?

A11:   With the implementation of the "Healthy China 2030" plan, the health industry is experiencing rapid growth, increasing the demand for both programs' graduates. Rehabilitation Therapy graduates typically work in hospitals, medical institutions, and sports teams, engaging in rehabilitation treatment. Health Service and Management graduates find employment in health departments, hospitals, medical institutions, and health management companies.

Q12: Are there specific requirements for the English language score? What if the Gaokao foreign language exam was not in English?

A12:   There are no strict requirements for the English language score, but students with a strong English foundation (typically scoring above 100 in English) are recommended. If the Gaokao foreign language exam was in a non-English language, students should carefully assess their ability to study in English before applying, as the professional courses are taught entirely in English.

Q13: What are the core courses? Are anatomy and higher mathematics included?

A13:   Approximately 60% of the courses are from Keele University, covering Western medical knowledge, while 40% are public and professional courses from the Chinese side. Understanding the human body's structure is essential due to the nature of the work.
